Purchases accelerated the closer people got to completing the card—people bought coffee more frequently as the goal came into view.

When customers were given a 12-stamp card with two stamps already filled in, they finished faster than customers given a blank 10-stamp card—even though both required the same 10 purchases. Feeling further along, not being further along, was enough to speed people up.
